They are usually danced in "squares" or
"longways", generally in sets of four couples.
The use of French expressions in Scottish country dancing such
as "poussette", "dos à dos", "pas de basque" prove that close
relations existed between France and Scotland as early as the
15th century.
Scottish country dances are danced worldwide, and the RSCDS
(Royal Scottish Country Dance Society) has recognised more
than 500 groups (22 in France).
